Maarten Baas pepper mill

Few designers have such a recognizable style as Maarten Baas. Just by looking at this object you can guess that this somewhat awry pepper mill sprouted from his brain.

Baas took a turn from the archetypal pepper mill, which consists of a cylinder with a round head on top. Instead of streamlining the two parts into a unified whole, he chose to make the pepper mill resemble a sketchy drawing of a mill. Baas designed a perfectly functional kitchen tool made of ABS resin that looks like it was being put together by grandfather in his shed. This contrast, industrial versus handmade, forms the core of Baas' work.

If you look closely, you will see that this pepper mill has no straight line. Even the length of the cylinder bends slightly. This is a piece of minutely designed imperfection.
